According to the 2014 Dice Salary Survey, technology professionals earned an average of $89,450 last year, up 2% from 2013. Increases came from both internal raises, and changing employers.
There’s a reason for the high salaries and pay increases reported by the survey; demand for tech professionals is continuously on the rise, and skilled talent is increasingly harder to find.
The majority of employers surveyed reported difficulty finding qualified workers such as mechanical engineers, machinists, and numerically controlled machine tool programmers, among others.
This talent gap leaves tech professionals with the upper hand. Sixty-five percent of workers surveyed are optimistic about their ability to find a new position if they desire, and 37% actually plan to change employers for higher pay and better benefits. The pressure is on companies to hire, train, and provide incentives for these workers, in order to keep them.
In the meantime, educating and training the nation’s youth to be proficient in STEM subjects is key to not going outside the country for talent.
