People are back at work after a long Labor Day weekend – though perhaps not as many as economists had predicted. Let’s take a look at the August 2016 BLS jobs report.
1. Pay didn’t increase as much as predicted. Average hourly wages were only up .12% (3 cents) from last month, whereas last year they were up 2.4% from a year ago. According to the Wall Street Journal, this could have something to do with the fact that the lowest-paying sector – “food services and drinking places” – also added the most jobs of the month.
2. Fewer jobs were added. While 270,000 jobs were added in July, only 151,000 jobs were added in August. That’s a sharp decrease, and also less than the consensus, which had been 180,000. Still, that number is considered enough to absorb workforce growth, says bankrate.com.
3. It’s not as bad as it sounds. For some reason, possibly due to school starting, August numbers have often been disappointing. This is why economists say month-by-month reporting isn’t as reliable as year-by-year reporting. Plus, while the numbers aren’t great, they still show steady if slow growth.
Three times you should always follow up
Picture it. You’ve been searching for a job for weeks now, and you’ve even had some interest in the form of recruiters reaching out for interviews. But you haven’t found that perfect job you know must be out there somewhere. Suddenly, you see it. The job description matches exactly what you’ve been looking for. You submit your application. A few days go by. And you start to wonder…when, and how, should you follow up?
If you seem too eager, will you scare them off? Too persistent, and you might annoy them? But if you don’t reach out and show you really want the job, will someone else beat you to the punch?
Whereas before, you didn’t bother overthinking the follow-up process because the stakes weren’t that high, now you really want this job – and you don’t want to ruin your chances by making the wrong move.
The truth is, everything will be just fine and if you’re meant to have that job, you’ll get it. But to eliminate some doubt, here are three specific circumstances where you should absolutely follow up.
1. When you didn’t get an automated response. After submitting your application, wait 24 hours. If you haven’t received an email assuring you your application was received, contact the hiring manager (if possible) with a polite email to let them know you’ve applied and are excited to hear more about the opportunity (don’t forget to attach your resume).
2. After the interview. Always, always send a thank-you note. These days, an email is often appropriate, but a hand-written note will show you went the extra mile. Don’t let too much time pass between the interview and the follow up. Later that day, or the next day is best.
3. When you didn’t get the job. Just because you didn’t land the job this time, doesn’t mean you won’t be considered at a later date. A well-crafted follow up, thanking them for their time, and expressing interest in future consideration, will make you seem like a class act who genuinely wants to work there. You’ll keep the doors open, and you never know what may come of it down the road.

In April, more tech professionals quit their jobs than in March. This is according to the latest U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. And it’s part of a continuing trend, as this quarter, more techies quit than in the last.
Why the voluntary quits? Many workers are simply leaving their current positions to accept or search for new, better ones that pay more for their skill set. This confidence in their ability to find new jobs suggests a strong economy, at least where tech is concerned.
But besides money, there are other reasons more tech pros are quitting their jobs. A recent Dice survey found that 43 percent of tech professionals who plan on quitting are searching for better working conditions. A third of the workers who are leaving their jobs desire more responsibility within their position. Another 16 percent are looking for a shorter commute, while 14 percent are relocating. And companies are taking notice.
As tech professionals get choosier, employers are responding by increasing incentives to retain them. More companies are offering higher compensation, more challenging assignments, flexible work schedules, opportunities to work remotely, and more frequent promotions.

The federal government’s recently redesigned website provides data from over 7,000 colleges and universities. That data includes tuition, graduation rates, SAT scores, average salaries post-graduation, and other information people can use to decide if the school is right for them. It’s just one small part of a larger effort on behalf of the government to encourage and bolster the pursuit of STEM careers – a much-needed and sought-after skill set at companies these days.

Which segment of STEM careers is the most popular amongst today’s emerging millennials? According to U.S. News, Mechanical Engineering takes the lead and “a little more than 20% of STEM students have an affinity for designing, developing, and testing various tools and devices.”

Did you know that how you leave the office at the end of the day has a drastic impact on tomorrow’s agenda? So, if you are that person that calls it quits right before five o’clock, you might need to start rethinking your end of the day ritual.
By making a few adjustments, and checking out our tips, your next workday morning might be a little easier on you:
- Review Tomorrow’s “To-Do’s”: This is the most important tip to implement and in most cases, the most effective. Right before the end of the day, look at your calendar for the following day so you know what lies ahead. Then, make a quick to-do list of what you need to accomplish the next day. That way you can leave work with a clear mind and be able to sleep better at night knowing what the next day holds!
- Reflection: Once you have completed the items mentioned above, go ahead and review the day’s objectives. Did you accomplish everything you wanted to? Are there any pending items or ongoing projects that requires more time? If so make sure to be a note of this as well. If needed, keep your manager in the loop so he or she is aware and knows you are on top of it.
- Follow Through with Obligations: If you have promised someone that you would get back with them by a certain day or time, make sure you provide a response. If it is necessary to follow up in the morning, be courteous and let him or her know so they are not waiting around for your answers.
- Avoid a Messy Desk: Once steps 1-3 are complete, go ahead and tidy up your desk. It will not do you any good to come into work the next morning surrounded by clutter. Come in feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day’s tasks5
- Don’t Be Sneaky: Even if you feel as if you completed the day’s goals, go above and beyond by putting in more than what is required. Do not sneak out at 4:45, tell your team members good bye at the end of the day! That way, they know you are a team player and you are not waiting until the clock strikes at 5:00 to run out the door!
By tweaking your afternoon ritual, you will not only get noticed by your manager, but other team members as well, which demonstrates you are willing to go above and beyond in your current role.
